With 1 in 5 in the UK living below the poverty line it is often left to charity organisations like us and The Trussell Trust to offer poverty support and crisis relief.  Trussell Trust foodbanks provided more than 27,000 emergency packages to people in crisis in Tyne and Wear last year, such supplies provide a lifeline to people most in need.

According to the Evening Chronicle last month, more than 27,000 three-day parcels were provided by The Trussell Trust foodbanks in Tyne and Wear between April 2017 and March 2018 with 11,000 going to children.

Gateshead’s foodbank are locally ran but part of the national network of foodbanks supported by The Trussel Trust who work to combat poverty and hunger across the UK, they believe that no one in our community should have to face going hungry. Gateshead’s opened in 2012 and ever since have been there for our residents most destitute, those referred to the foodbank are provided with three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food.

Last year our local foodbank disturbed 21 tonnes of food, but have only received donations amounting to 14 tonnes and are now in desperate need of 7 tonnes for their warehouse.

Items they need most include:

Fruit, Fish, long life Juice, Long life Milk, Tinned Fruit, Rice Pudding, Sponger Puddings, Custard, Sugar, Jam, Noodles, Shampoo, Deodorant, and Baby food.

If you think you may be able to help, here are a few suggestions of the things you can do:

1) Arrange a collection at your school, office, café, church, etc to help make up for the 7 ton short fall.

2) Find your local drop off point and donate there:https://gateshead.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food/

3) Speak directly to the warehouse team on 07496 840 722 or email them at [email protected]
