Last month, we at Citizens Advice Gateshead were a part of a national investigation on Post Office use in the UK. Half of those surveyed expressed a post office is one of the most important services in our community, more so than a bank library or a pub. This really highlighted the importance of Post Office branches, especially in rural areas.

Nationally, Citizens Advice is the statutory consumer watchdog for postal services and following this research we've been calling on the government to provide support in recognition of the important role rule post offices play for consumers and businesses.

The government has now announced on Wednesday, they would commit £160 million funding to protect community branches and maintain people's access to their local branch. As Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice stated:

The funding committed to the Post Office network today will help to create a sustainable future for these valued community assets. Post Offices are often relied upon by more vulnerable, including older and disabled people, as well as small businesses that would have to meet higher costs without access to their services locally. The extra funding accounted by the government goes a long way towards making Post Offices a fixture in all communities for years to come.
