When a family member is affected by cancer they are usually faced with a significant amount of financial upheaval amidst this significant of emotional upheaval and adjustment. Unplanned time off work can lead to a major reduction in household income, and this is made worse by unexpected costs for things like travel and meals during copious hospital visits. It’s not surprising then that xxx% of families get into debt, sometimes for the very first time, while they’re coping with the obvious emotional upheaval and impacts on family life.

Since 2015, with the generous support of the Inspired by Maya Trust Fund, Citizens Advice Gateshead has had the privilege of helping (XXX) families affected by cancer with dedicated advice, information and practical support. At a time when it’s sometimes hard to focus on anything other than the obvious, families have appreciated the dedicated help. We helped each client dig deep to find a way through their financial challenges, giving practical help to fill in forms, specialist knowledge to help them claim benefits, sick pay and assistance talking things through with their employer. As well as alleviating some of the pressure families by avoiding household costs from spiraling out of control and over £xxxx in their pockets.
