Citizens Advice Gateshead is appealing to students to join its ranks of volunteers and gain valuable experience. This week, 19 - 25 February, is Student Volunteering Week, an annual event that celebrates the contribution of student volunteers and shows people interested in volunteering what they could gain by signing up.

Citizens Advice Gateshead is already supported by students with a background in English, Business, Law, politics and more! We want to encourage more students from all backgrounds and subject areas to get involved. Across England and Wales, Citizens Advice is powered by 23,000 volunteers, who last year helped 2.7 million people with the problems they faced. Locally Citizens Advice Gateshead volunteers helped 13,000 people in 2016/17 with problems around benefits, debt, housing, employment and more. Volunteers give face-to-face, telephone and web advice, as well as providing digital assistance, money management skills and information to people who need help and campaigning for change about the issues that most affect the people we assist. Our volunteers have a range of skills and experience and are of a range of ages and backgrounds.

Citizens Advice Chief Executive/Manager Gillian Guy said:
"Volunteers are crucial and we simply couldn't function without their time and dedication. Our student volunteers are a real asset to the service, and they get a lot out of working with us too. Volunteering can be a chance to pick up essential experience in teamwork, communication and project management, plus skills for specific careers, for example, in law or social policy. As well as boosting your CV, volunteering with Citizens Advice gives you the chance to help give back to your local community and make a real, positive impact on the lives of people who seek advice. As demand for our service continues to grow, we need more volunteers than ever to make sure that our clients get the help that they need."

One student volunteer said:

"I really enjoy coming to volunteer at Citizens Advice Gateshead; I get real work environment experience that fits around my studies, enhance my degree and make a difference in the local community!"
